The Election Commission had not demonstrat ed that EVMs could not be rigged. An independen t expert committee must be appointedto find out how electronic voting machines could be safeguarde d securely. If the Commission wants to continue their use in their present form, it should give aprinted receipt to every voter just as people used to get in automated teller machines after cash withdrawal .

The electronic voting machines can do any miracle. I am not the only one who says that. An engineer has proved to the Election Commission that the electronic voting machines can alter the results.

We are not against EVMs or the use of technology in elections. It had not been proved conclusive ly that the EVMs are tamper-pro of. Hence the present electronic voting system should be modernized by introducin g a voter verifiable paper trail to serve as a back up and to promote transparen cy in the electoral process.

I personally regard it significan t that Germany, technologi cally, one of the most advanced countries of the world, has become so wary of EVMs as to ban their use altogether . We should revert to ballot papers unless the Election Commission is able to ensure that Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) are foolproof

In many polling stations in Tamil Nadu, EVMs are not functionin g properly. Even votes polled in favour of the AIADMK are being registered in favour of other candidates . In a democracy, every voter has a right to know whether the vote she/ he hascast has gone to the candidate or party it was meant for. In the absence of such certainty, the entire democratic process will be rendered a mockery.

Election Commission of India (ECI) to call an all-party meeting to deliberate on the reliabilit y and non-corrup tibility of EVMs. It was imperative for the Election Commission to either restore faith of people in the voting through the EVMs or revert back to the old process of ballot papers.
